Vegetable Industry Education & Training Gap Analysis

Hort Innovation

RMCG was engaged by Hort Innovation to undertake a gap analysis of education and training for the Australian vegetable industry (VG14061). The study included a review of education, training and learning in agriculture and the potential impact of training and education on profitability. Findings from this study were then tested and validated through consultation with industry stakeholders.

The gap analysis identified the improvements in formal training and the importance of tailoring training to the needs of specific groupings within the industry, opposed to a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach. The ‘producer driven’ approach was highlighted as key to a successful training initiative. The recommended initiative approach provided industry, including producers, groups and training providers with the opportunity to submit proposals (training plans) to meet their specific needs and that of their staff. The most important attributes of training delivery and content for the vegetable industry are relevance, ease of access, responsiveness and flexibility. To facilitate this approach to training, it was recommended that a central, industry-owned national coordination role be established.

Following the gap analysis, the vegetable industry training initiative VegPRO was created by Hort Innovation, and is being delivered by RMCG and AHR. For more information on the initiative visit www.vegpro.com.au or contact Sophie Lapsley, on sophiel@rmcg.com.au
